Practical AI: features users actually keep using

How we scope copilots, RAG, and automation so large language models deliver measurable outcomes.

The AI features that stick are rarely the flashiest demos. They remove a repetitive step in a workflow people already hate — drafting notes, summarizing documents, routing tickets — and they leave a human in control of what gets saved.

At Mechabits we scope AI like any other product slice: who is the user, what decision does the model assist, what data is allowed in context, and how do we measure success. RAG over private corpora, citations, role-aware retrieval, and evaluation sets matter more than model brand names on a slide.

Guardrails are part of the build. Permissions, logging, cost controls, and a clear review loop prevent “clever” assistants from becoming compliance or support problems. If we cannot explain how an answer was grounded, it is not ready for production.

Done well, AI feels quiet: fewer clicks, faster first drafts, clearer handoffs. Done poorly, it is a chat box nobody opens twice. We aim for the first kind.
